Michael Jackson’s favorite song

Michael Jackson’s favorite song…

Not “Billy Jean.” Not “Beat It.” Not “Thriller.”

“Smile”

Smile, though your heart is aching

Smile, even though it’s breaking

When there are clouds in the sky

You’ll get by…

If you smile

With your fear and sorrow

Smile and maybe tomorrow

You’ll find that life is still worthwhile

If you just…

Light up your face with gladness

Hide every trace of sadness

Although a tear may be ever so near

That’s the time you must keep on trying

Smile, what’s the use in crying

You’ll find that life is still worthwhile

If you just…

Smile, though your heart is aching

Smile, even though it’s breaking

When there are clouds in the sky

You’ll get by…

If you smile

Through your fear and sorrow

Smile and maybe tomorrow

You’ll find that life is still worthwhile

If you just smile…

That’s the time you must keep on trying

Smile, what’s the use of crying

You’ll find that life is still worthwhile

If you just smile

It’s easy to smile when we are feeling happy, loving, loved, secure, and a whole host of other positive emotions. But what about when we feel down, upset, sad, depressed, anxious? These are the times we feel least inclined to smile. In fact, smiling may be the last thing we want to do when we’re feeling bad inside. We think we must wait to feel good again before we can smile. We wait, and wait, and wait…

This is a big mistake!

While it is true that pleasant emotional states can elicit smiles, the reverse is also true… smiling can elicit a more pleasant inner state, even when we’re in pain or discomfort.

I’m not talking about the fake smiles that people plaster on their faces to hide their pain or exhibit politeness. I am speaking of a “genuine” loving smile, the kind that starts around the eyes and spreads throughout the entire face, including, but not limited to, the mouth.

Try it right now. Voluntarily smile, preferably showing teeth, with the corners of the eyes slightly scrunched up. Smile with your entire face. Hold it for several seconds. Notice how you feel before and after you do this. Does this make you feel at least a little bit lighter, more loving on the inside?

Extend a sincere, loving smile to another human being and see how that feels inside of you. Did you notice how they responded?

Smiling will not solve your problems, or eliminate the need to take action. But it is one powerful step virtually anyone can take, at any time, to signal the brain to change its physiology on the spot, to produce an enhanced sense of well-being, however subtle. When extended toward others, it communicates a sense of love and connection with them that is often reciprocated in kind. You can’t go wrong with a smile.

Smile, though your heart is aching

Smile, even though it’s breaking

When there are clouds in the sky

You’ll get by…

If you smile
